![]() I have received an inquiry regarding the question you have about servicing your Dixie Chopper machine. This may be a little off topic but in 2011 I contacted Dixie Chopper about why there was not a written procedure from them about how to change the hydraulic fluid. This lack of finger grips is a pain in the ass, especially when there is oil on the outside of the filter. They all lack the finger grips that can be found on every other type of oil and hydro filter available. I suspect that the Dixie Chopper, Zinga and Wix filters all come off of the same production line. The Wix 57490 can be bought for around $5 on the Internet. The Wix 57490 hydro filter is 100% compatible and is the filter that I use on my Dixie. If you've bought Dixie's hydro filters before, you know that for the amount of money charged for these filters, they should be gold plated. The good news is that there is a hydro filter available that is 100% compatible with Dixie's specifications. This filter contains a bypass valve and should not be used. Wix and NAPA both list the same filter (Wix 51215 and NAPA 1215) as being suitable for use in Dixie's hydro system. I mention this because there is a lot of advice available on the Internet concerning the use of regular automotive type oil filters in hydro systems. If a bypass type filter is used, the hydro pumps will not be able to draw the hydro fluid through the filters, resulting in catastrophic destruction of the hydro system. In a hydro system, the oil is pulled through the filter by the hydro pumps. In an automobile application, the oil is pumped or forced through the filter by the engine's oil pump. The reason for a lack of a bypass valve has to do with the way the hydro system works. This is true of virtually every hydro filter that you can buy. The other critical aspect of the Dixie 68140 filter is that it lacks a bypass valve. I don't recommend using these filters regardless of what anybody tells you. Rotary, Stens, Luber Finer and others filter brands, market the 10 micron filter as being correct for Dixies. You will often see the 10 micron filter being advertised as suitable for Dixies. Dixie does not recommend the use of a 10 micron filter. Dixie felt that this low micron rating created too much restriction and decided to up the microns to 40. Dixie used to use the Dixie Chopper 60105 filter. The first is that it is a 40 micron filter. There are 2 critical aspects to this filter. The filter is made by Zinga and carries their BE-40-0 part number. The Dixie Chopper 68140 hydro filter is currently Dixie's choice for their mowers. I just want to put this info out there for everybody that may have a Dixie.
